002 - File types - uses, pros and cons

Using images and detailed explanations explain the differences and pro's and cons of using a range of file types used in digital imaging.

  • JPEG
  • TIFF
  • RAW
  • PNG
  • PSD (Photoshop documents)
Make sure when you do this task you show that you're fully aware of the pros and cons of using JPEG files - the fact that when they saved and re-named they compress and degrade - show examples of how this works.

One way of showing the impact of reducing JPEG file sizes is to open up a JPEG file in Photoshop and focus in on one detail - here below an eye...

This image is the smaller of the 2 -  19KB and was saved as a small file. You can see that the image is starting to pixelate.

The same image, but saved as a larger file 39KB.

If we zoom in on the catch light you can see how the larger image here below uses a larger range of colours to render the eye catchlight detail... (Magnified 128,000)

This is the smaller 39KB file. (Below) and we can see it's been simplified by the reduction of colours used to render the catchlight in the eye.

When seen on a monitor or saved in a document such as your design sheets the difference because of the low quality of monitors 72dpi is negligible and would allow you to flick through a series of images quickly with little care for the quality. Large full size files might take a while to look at one after another. Large files used in word docs or power-points mean the document will take ages to open and navigate through, so in these instances JPEG's are perfect when saved as small files.

The other aspect to JPEG's they are able to be handled by the simplest of software, where as TIFF's, Raw and PSD docs need specialist software and apps to open these file formats.
